The Best Presents of All

I hear people talking, at this time of year, about the best Christmas gifts they’ve ever received.  I can’t really say that I have a best Christmas gift ever.  I’ve received lots of stuff over the years.  Lots of stuff that I can no longer recall.  Housewares, clothes, cosmetics.  I’ve appreciated all of them, to be sure, but I don’t think I’ve ever had something that really stood out among all the others.

I guess that’s because it’s not the presents that what make Christmas special or memorable for me.  They’re fun.  I like making and choosing gifts for people.  But mostly, I like the spirit of the season.  I like the music.  The food.  THE FOOD!!!!  I love baking Christmas treats, licking the spoon as the cookies heat up in the oven, sharing my productions with people I love.  And now that I have children, I love sharing all this with them.  I like doing Christmas crafts with them.  I like teaching them the lyrics to Christmas carols, even if it means subjecting them to my tone-deaf singing voice.  I like making and hanging tree decorations with them.  And with EcoDad too.  I love listening to our Stuart McLean Vinyl Cafe Christmas Stories CD with EcoDad in the evening after the children are in bed.  We turn on the lights on our little tree (it’s about 1 metre/ 3 feet high) and sit together and laugh endlessly at the Christmas troubles experienced by Dave and Morley.

Yup, the magic of Christmas, for me, lies entirely in the traditions and fun of the season.  So when I’m called upon to name a best Christmas gift ever, I name my kids.  Sure, neither of them were born on Christmas.  But they’ve made Christmas a really magical, wonderful season for me.  And that’s why they are my best presents ever.  Because I adore them and they make my whole year richer and more wonderful.

They are the BEST.
