To Market, To Market…
To buy a fat pig.
Home again, home again,
jiggity jigg.
To market, to market,
to buy a fat hog.
Home again, home again,
jiggity jogg.
To market, to market,
to buy a plum bun.
Home again, home again,
Market is done.
So today we went to the zoo. No we didn’t!!! We went to the market! And I discovered that a kilo of spinach is a hell of a lot of spinach. But I didn’t know how to say, “I’ve changed my mind, I only want half a kilo,” so we have a kilo of spinach. Or we did. I made a spinach and mushroom lightly curried stir-fry for din-dins. So we have 900grams of spinach left. Seriously, it doesn’t look like I took a single leaf of the stuff out of the bag, and yet I spent a half hour washing all the spinach I used. I repeat: A KILO OF SPINACH IS A HELL OF A LOT OF SPINACH!!!
We didn’t just buy spinach though. We bought mandarin oranges, starking apples, leeks, pumpkin, carrots, kiwis, lettuce, nuts, anchovies, simit (Turkish ring bread), tomatoes… I think there was more but I’m too lazy to check the fridge at the moment. In total, it cost about 15 lira. That’s about 12 Canadian dollars. 10 American smackeroos. 5 quid. And it’s nice, fresh, beautiful produce (with the exception of the nuts and the fish, because I don’t think they qualify as produce, do they?)
The Kidlet enjoyed herself immensely. Once she stopped screaming. Such is the life of a kidlet. She lost her doll in the stalls near the obnoxious broccoli seller who decided to tell me that she was poorly dressed and I was making her sick. She was warmly dressed and already sick and I refuse to overdress her just because it’s Turkish custom to dress children as if they’re on an Arctic expedition just because it’s not beach weather. Yes, this is a subject I’m touchy about. So, she lost her doll and did some screaming but then her Super Daddy saved the day by finding it beneath some cabbages. Yay for Super Daddy. And the Kidlet was happy again.
And we did other things and it was fun but I am tired and have a bit of a belly ache due to the huge quantities of spinach ingested this evening… so I’m going to bed.

You’re going to have to find some seriously creative uses for all of that spinach. Perhaps you could bag it and send it to Canada and the States considering the somewhat recent events.
Good idea. I have a friend in Brooklyn who got hit with that spinach-related food poisoning. Maybe she’s like some of our good stuff. But there are so many spinach recipes to try out. Spinach cookies. Spinach gingerbread. Ugh. How AM I gonna use all this spinach???
Freeze it and cook it later.
Ahh, to freeze and cook would be a lovely thing. But we have a crap freezer. Really crap. So we don’t freeze. We did. It’s not worth it. Nothing stays frozen. So no freezing. We managed to use it all though, and without getting sick of it. D make a spinach and mushroom omelette for brekkie yesterday and I made a curried spinach lentil soup for supper. I put in too much spice though, and couldn’t eat it. D’oh!
