Going Green Tip #2
You didn’t think I’d forgotten about my resolve to post green ideas, did you? I haven’t. I recently read that the green “trend” in the United States is over. Advertisers aren’t interested in environmental themes anymore. Buyers aren’t responding to earth-friendly products with much vigour anymore.
It sickens me.
Preventing our planet from being destroyed should not be a trend, people. It should be a way of life. I, for one, will continue to live as sustainably as I can and to promote sustainable living whenever I have the chance.
With that in mind, I will get off my soapbox and draw your attention to a very intelligent, enviromentally friendly alternative to the plastic baggie:
Cute, hey? It’s a fabric baggie. You use it as you would a plastic one (ziploc, glad, etc) and then toss it in the wash instead of in the recycling or the garbage. An added bonus is that your food does not touch plastic. With the BPA discovery this year, I am working towards eliminating plastic entirely from our kitchen.
I bought my fabric baggies from gnomeclothes on Etsy. I imagine that they’re easy to make, but as I don’t know how to sew (hanging my head in shame) I bought mine from someone who does. They are the handiest little things. I chose a variety of fun prints and the Kidlet just loves having her snacks out of them when we’re on the go. For wet foods, a little stainless steel bowl can easily be slipped inside these tidy little bags.
In addition to reducing your waste output and steering your family away from toxins in plastic, you can also feel confident about choosing fabric because it is, like so many green alternatives, less expensive. Drop a few bucks on these reusable bags and you won’t need plastic again.
