When The Mood Doesn’t Strike…
EcoKid hadn’t been feeling the art groove in a while. I’d dangled crayons before her. Offered up markers, paper, paint, and chalk. I’d even pulled out the glitter glue, pom-poms, sparkles, feathers, and pipe cleaners. She wasn’t biting.
I guess we all go through times like that, when the things that usually interest us just don’t. So, I left her alone to do her own thing. The girl needs to have grooves besides art after all. Her groove, for the past few weeks, had been lining up her figurines whilst reciting tales from her books and DVDs. And singing waaaay out of tune, without any rhythym, just like her mama. Chip off the ol’ block.
I brought up art, crafts, and handiwork in conversation to remind her that they exist. And I let her see me doing my stuff.
Then, one day while my mom was still here visiting, I got an outing on my own. I went for an overdue haircut (yeah, it was me, not a sasquatch, you saw on the street earlier this month.) On my way home from the haircut I popped in to the university’s bookstore looking for… um, I don’t actually remember what I was looking for, such is the nature of my post-childbearing memory. Whatever it was that I’d popped in for wasn’t available because I walked out with just one thing, one thing I hadn’t planned on buying because it hadn’t been on my radar: window paint.
That’s how EcoKid got her art groove back.
Since then, we’ve had to wash the windows almost daily to give her a new canvas. We’re all out of that paint I paid too much for too. Now we’re on to what I ought to have imagined in the first place: tempera paint mixed with water and dish soap. The dish soap makes cleaning it up a snap.
Who wants to come to our house for a painting party?

Oh my gosh! That is sooooooo cool! And we have a great big window in the front room too… Hmmm, I have finger paints here. Do you think it would work with washable finger paint mixed with water and dishsoap??

I bet it would!
I should have added that putting a drop cloth (we have a reusable one) below the window helps enormously with clean up.

The boys have something similar. They are called window clings. You using special paint make cling on the window type of images. The boys them because they can be moved from window to window.
Though the paint is not washable, so perhaps this is an older child task.
So fun! We have a sliding glass door that I imagine Cole would LOVE to paint on!!

We want to come! Looks like a blast. Too bad our picture windows are not safely accessible (unless of course one thinks a 3 yr old standing on the back of a couch is safe!).
i’m glad i saw this post before i got home from work one evening to find our picture window full of delightful images – you have saved me a heart attack, and for that, i thank you!!

Very cool! I want to do this and I’m not even a kid..I’m already scoping out our sliding glass doors. Except I’m gonna keep my clothes on… I don’t want to upset my family too much!
Sounds fun!
Psst… Jean… the first photo shows my 3 year old standing on the back of a couch…

Mirrors… as in the kinds that are on the backs of doors are also great for painting on… and we have organic/environmentally friendly cleaners so A can clean his messes too, which, apparently is as much fun as cleaning!

When Rebecca was 4 she stopped drawing. Cold turkey. She’d been drawing non-stop for 2 years and she drew pictures where people were recognizable. She was talented beyond her years. Then she stopped and no urging-pleading-begging would get her to draw again. I mentioned this to her teacher of the prior year and the teacher told me that she was perfecting other talents. I hadn’t thought of that. She also assured me that Rebecca would again pick up a pencil, or crayon, or brush. I was not to worry. She was right!

Brilliant idea! I’m trying it first thing tomorrow! I’ve been on the hunt for something new to keep my little monster occupied. Mayhem and destruction are getting old, LOL!

Love this! We have a huge window/door that the kids “color” on with their spit. Not nearly as lovely as your daughter’s work, lol! I might just have to put a tarp down and get some window paints. Thanks for the idea.
